Charles Coulson Rich was born on August 21, 1809, in Campbell County, Kentucky. He was instructed in the Mormon faith by Lyman Wight and baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by George M. Hinckle in 1832. In 1838 he married Sarah D. Pea, the first of his six wives. Rich lived in Calfwell County, Missouri, and fought in the Battle of Crooked River. He and his family later settled in Nauvoo, Illinois, where Rich was made a member of the Council of Fifty and served in the Nauvoo Legion. Following the death of Joseph Smith, Rich followed Brigham Young to Utah, and in 1848 he was made the president of the Salt Lake Stake. He was appointed to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles by Young in 1849. Rich helped establish a Mormon settlement in San Bernardino, California, and also served as president of the British Mission in the 1860s. He died at Paris, Idaho, in 1883.

Charles Coulson Rich was a Mormon missionary in Tazewell County, Illinois and in 1834 joined the aborted military expedition sent by Gov. Dunklin to protect the Mormons in Missouri.

Sarah DeArmon Pea Rich was born on September 23, 1814, in St. Clair County, Illinois. In 1824 her family moved to western Tennessee, where the family converted from the Reformed Methodist Church to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1835. In the 1830s the family moved to Far West, Missouri, where Sarah married Charles C. Rich in 1838. The couple eventually had nine children. Sarah died in 1893.
