Adolf Galland (b. Mar. 19, 1912, Westerholt, Germany-d. Feb. 9, 1996, Remagen-Oberwinter, Germany), German Air Force officer, joined the Luftwaffe in 1933. He flew more than 300 missions for the Nationalist side during the Spanish Civil War, and from 1939 to 1945 participated in key battles including the Polish Campaign, Battle of France, Battle of Belgium, and Battle of Britain. This highly-decorated fighter pilot and commander of Germany's fighter force was captured by the U.S. Army in May 1945 and remained a prisoner of war until 1947.
