Buckley was Professor of English at the University of Melbourne from 1967. He was also a poet and an active participant in Australian Catholic intellectual life.

Vincent Buckley was born in 1925, Romsey, Victoria. He co-founded the magazine Prospect, and later became poetry editor for the Bulletin, and held a personal chair in poetry at Melbourne University. He died in 1988.
