Marion Perry Maus was born in Maryland on August 25, 1850. He attended West Point Military Academy and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the First Infantry in 1874. He served at various posts in Nebraska and Dakota Territory, including Fort Randall and Fort Sully. He later was posted to Texas and Arizona in the 1880s and California in the 1890s. He served in the Spanish-American War in Cuba and after the war in the Philippines. He retired in 1913 as a Brigadier General.
