William Roscoe Thayer was an American historian and biographer. He was a graduate of Harvard, and maintained close ties to the university throughout his life. He began writing criticism and editorials on all subjects for newspapers, and went on to produce well-received histories and biographies. He had an affinity for Italy, and was steadfastly anti-German in the World War I era.
