John Waddington was born in Leeds, where he started preaching while still a teenager. He attended Airedale College, where he continued preaching, and was ordained pastor. He held several positions as pastor, and is credited with introducing Sunday School to Congregational churches. He was also an author, most notably producing several histories of congregationalism and other religious topics.
