Otto Herz was an officer in the 242nd Division of the German army in World War I from 1915 to 1919. According to his daughter Ruth Herz (donor of this collection), he was wounded three times included a wound to the head which caused him to carry a piece of shrapnel in his skull for the rest of his life. Ruth Herz left Germany for England in 1939, the family was able to leave Germany for the United States in 1941.
