Arthur Phillip was born in London, educated at Greenwich, and at the age of seven joined the Royal Navy as an apprentice. He rose steadily in the service, attaining the rank of Captain. in 1786, he was assigned the duty of forming a convict settlement in Australia. His fleet arrived in Botany Bay in 1788, and in four years he had established a colony in what is now Sydney. Modern Australian historians describe him as the founder of New South Wales or of Australia.
